A round table with some leadership experts

Some of my leadership friends, all experts in leadership theory and practice, wanted to see if we could start to diagnose the current leadership crisis and what kind of response might be needed.

Dr Simon Walker

Simon Walker is CEO and Co-Founder of STEER leading a 12 year ground-breaking tech programme to track and improve soft skills & mental health through school to employment. We track national trends, from more than 400,000 students. Previously Simon taught at Oxford University and was CEO of The Leadership Community for 8 years, a leading soft-skill development consultancy working with blue chip corporate clients.

Simon is an Honorary Fellow at Bristol Graduate School of Education. He was awarded his doctorate from Winchester University for pioneering work in undefended leadership. He holds Masters degrees in Biology and Applied Psychology from Oxford University, where he also taught a graduate programme for seven years. His research demonstrating the role of steering cognition in adolescent mental health and learning, has led to the development of pioneering tools which are reducing mental health risks. He has served as a policy reviewer for the UNESCO programme of digital technology in education. He is a qualified member of the British Psychological Society.

Prof Will Foster

Professor Will Foster is Senior Consultant Leadership, Organisational Development and Research with Advance HE. He gained his Chair as the founding Professor of Leadership at Keele University and was the first academic to gain Professorial status on the Education and Scholarship route for his sustained applied Academic Leadership and scholarship. He is Honorary Professor with Waverley Abbey and holds a PhD (King’s College London) in ecclesiology, leadership and organisational culture; his monograph / most recent book has been published by Brill. He is an ordained minister / Pastor with AoG GB, Partner / Principal Consultant www.aparafos.com, and Secretary of EPTA.

Dr Roger Bretherton

Dr Roger Bretherton is Programme Director for the Professional Diploma in Positive Health at the Centre for Positive Health Sciences, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a UK accredited Clinical Psychologist, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

He is the director of Character Lab Lincoln, which conducts training, consultancy and research on character strengths interventions. His research team is currently investigating the benefits of humility in leaders, the role of mindfulness in character development, a strengths-based approach to pro-environmental behaviours, the role of wisdom in business leadership, and character strengths in entrepreneurs.

Roger has written two books and contributed extensively to the field with numerous articles and book chapters. He is also a reviewer for leading academic journals in applied psychology. Beyond academia, Roger delivers coaching, training, and keynotes to a wide range of public and private sector organizations, bridging research and practice to inspire transformational change.

Jo Nelson

A Chartered Occupational Psychologist, with particular interests and expertise in: Personality, Leadership, Leadership Derailment, Assessment and Selection, Potential, and Organisational Culture and Climate. Using a range of data, particularly personality profiles, to enable organisations to make better people decisions is a passion of mine. In addition, having had oversight of senior leadership development in a large organisation, I am committed to supporting leaders to develop and to be more effective and to improve team and organisational outcomes. Dr Tammy Dunahoo

An ordained minister and Portland Seminary alumna, Tammy Dunahoo, took on the role of executive dean of Portland Seminary in June of 2023. Dr. Dunahoo arrived with more than 40 years of church and denominational leadership experience. In the 20 years prior to joining the seminary, she worked in various capacities with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, most recently as director of leader health and development (2021-23). She previously served as the organization’s vice president of U.S. operations and general supervisor (2009-21), supervising ministries of the national church in all 50 states.

Her experience also includes serving as vice president of Foursquare’s Women in Ministry Leadership program (2008-09), as director of Foursquare Women International (2005-09), and as district supervisor of the Arkansas District of Foursquare Churches (2003-07).
